General Motors Introduces New GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado Pickups, Expects To Continue Dominance Over Ford (PHOTOS)

General Motors revealed plans for two refined versions of their Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups on Dec. 13, and expectations for both vehicles are already high.

Experts believe that the two trucks could be the most critical launch for GM since filing for bankruptcy and asking for a $50 billion bailout in 2009. The company has also been in a tight battle with Ford Motors for truck sales, mainly thanks to the F-150 pickup which is the top-selling truck at the moment according to Ford.

"We have made significant upgrades in the key areas of the new Silverado, and improved almost every detail of the truck," Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer for full-size and midsize trucks, said in a press statement. "Both Chevrolet loyalists and competitive shoppers are going to find a lot to love."

GM introduced both vehicles and three new engines in Michigan on Dec. 13. The 2014 versions look more aggressive and aerodynamic compared to the older models and according to GM, both vehicles will have updated steering, suspensions and brake systems.

GM said both trucks will be at least 200 pounds lighter than any truck produced by Ford and Chrysler. This should raise the gas mileage significantly for both vehicles.

"They're not looking to compete; they're looking to win," Jason Brickl, chief executive of Ballweg Chevrolet in Wisconsin, said of GM to Reuters.

Pricing and gas mileage has yet to be released for both vehicles, but GM President Marl Reuss said customers will be shocked by the prices according to the Associated Press. The 2013 base Silverado goes for around $24,600.

Reuters has reported that the company has put between $3 billion and $4 billion into the trucks, engines, and auto plants where the vehicles will be built.

"We're very pleased with the performance of our pickup truck over the years," Ford U.S. sales analyst Erich Merkle said to Reuters. "It's been the best-selling pickup in America for 35 years straight."

GM also revealed three new engine options that will be released next year:  a 262-horsepower, 4.3-liter V-6 option that GM says can tow a trailer, a 325-horsepower, 5.3-liter V-8 option that will get better mileage on highways than any truck they have produced before, and a 6.2-liter V-8 with 376 horsepower option that will be the "most capable engine in any light-duty pickup" according to GM.

Both vehicles will be released by June 2013.

"If GM's two-truck strategy is successful, Ford will probably be forced to reconsider its exit from the compact pickup truck segment," Polk analyst Tom Libby said to Reuters.
