Honda Recalls 871,000 SUV, Minivan Vehicles For Ignition Issues

Honda Motors will be recalling 871,000 vehicles that could move even after the key has been taken out of the ignition. Over 807,000 of the vehicles will be recalled in the U.S. according to Reuters.

The auto manufacturer said that the ignition interlock could become damaged which would then allow the key to be taken out even if the car's transmission lever is not in park.

"If the transmission is not in park and the parking brake is not set, the vehicle could roll away and a crash could occur," the company said in a statement.

The recall will affect 318,000 Odyssey minivans and 259,000 Pilot crossovers released during 2003 and 2004. Over 230,000 Acura MDX crossovers released through 2003 and 2006 will be recalled as well.

Around 64,000 Honda vehicles outside of the U.S. are also affected according to The New York Times.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported to Reuters that they have received complaints that an undisclosed number of Honda vehicles have been rolling away and only stopping after hitting objects like trees, fences and parked cars.

Safety investigators officially started investigating the company in October on over 43 complaints and at least five injuries related to the ignition issue. Of the 43 cases, 16 vehicles reportedly didn't stop until hitting something.

The worse injury reported to safety officials was when a driver was knocked down and run over by a 2003 Odyssey. The person sustained a fractured fibula while trying to stop the vehicle according to Reuters. Another person reportedly broke a leg after being hit by a vehicle.

Honda owners will start receiving letters in the mail sometime in February to be notified if their vehicle is being recalled.
