Over 50 journalists voted for semifinalists in each category just a few months ago to cut the field down from 45 vehicles, to 30, and then to 15 truck/utility vehicles. Of the semifinalist nominated for awards, five were from "non-domestic" automakers like Toyota and Honda according to The Detroit News. Seven vehicles have been nominated from foreign manufactures, and two from Ford Motors.

To qualify for awards, vehicles have to either been a completely new model or "substantially changed" from a previous model according to The Detroit News.

Voters will now evaluate vehicles on different aspects like handling, safety features, driver satisfaction, and price. The 2012 award show was a memorable one due to the fact that GM, Ford, and Chrysler all went home empty handed for the first time since 2006.

The three finalists for the 2013 North American Car of the Year have also been announced and will come down to either the 2013 Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Cadillac ATS.

The Hyundai Elantra won Car of the Year last year and the Range Rover Evoque won Truck/Utility of the Year.

The NAIAS will take place starting Jan. 19 until Jan. 27. at the Cobo Center. Click here for more information.
