A large asteroid known as Toutatis will pass Earth over the next few days and will be able to be seen from the skies for a short amount of time on Dec. 11. Those who live in Africa were able to see the asteroid at 3 p.m., meanwhile most who live in the U.S. will be able to see the asteroid at 10 p.m.

The show will also include commentary from Slooh president Patrick Paolucci and Astronomy Magazine writer Bob Berman according to Space.com.
"Slooh technical staff will let the public follow this fast-moving asteroid in two different ways. In one view, the background stars will be tracked at their own rate and the asteroid will appear as an obvious streak or a moving time-lapse dot across the starry field," Berman said in a press statement.
Toutatis was first discovered in 1934 but was not recognized as an official asteroid and named until 1989. It makes only one trip around the sun every four years according to Space.com.
The closest Toutatis has ever been to Earth was in 2004 when it was "only" 10 million miles away. In comparison this would be about four times the distance between earth and the moon according to Wired.com.
The closest the asteroid will get to earth is between Tuesday night into Wednesday when it will be around 37 million miles away, or 18 times the distance between earth and the moon.
If Toutatis ever did actually crash into the Earth, it could cause "catastrophic damage" according to most experts. Most scientists feel that anything that hits earth at least 0.6 miles wide could have negative global consequences and would most likely change the Earth's climate for a long time.
The asteroid that made dinosaurs extinct nearly 65 million years ago was approximately 6 miles wide according to Space.com.
