2014 Ford Transit Full Sized Van Makes American Debut, Five Cylinder Diesel Option Available

Ford introduced a brand-new Transit full-sized van this week and is set to go on sale towards the end of 2013. The new van will be available in a 3.2-liter Power Stroke five-cylinder diesel, further establishing Ford's reputation for quality trucks and SUVs.

The new van is the second of its kind in North American according to a press release issues by Ford.

"Commercial van drivers spend most of their working hours behind the wheel. We know they want a fuel-efficient diesel engine with smooth, responsive performance and low operating costs," said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president of Powertrain Engineering in a press release. "The 3.2-liter Power Stroke engine has been developed and proven globally to deliver a world-class combination of power, fuel economy and refinement."

The new Power Stroke will be the only five-cylinder diesel engine available in a van produced for North America. The 3.2-liter option will offer eight vehicles total rated at 40 mpg or higher. This number is more than double today's total and more than any other automaker according to the press release.

The vehicle has yet to be certified in North America but the diesel engine is rated in Europe with 197 horsepower with 347 pound-feet of torque.

The Power Stroke is one of many different options available for the Transit in North America. Other options include the 3.5-liter EcoBoost gas engine. Most engines will be mated to Ford's 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission according to the press release.

"The Power Stroke name is synonymous with power, work and long-term durability," said Bakaj. "We're confident our commercial van customers will be extremely pleased with the 3.2-liter's fuel economy, performance and running costs."

The Power Stroke will be produced in Ford's Strandale Engine Plant in South Africa. It will be transported to Ford's Kansas City Assembly Plant in Missouri.
