Nvidia Shield Tablet: Android Nougat Update Confirmed, But Will it Fix Its Battery Issues?

The Nvidia Shield Tablet and the Tablet K1 will get the Android Nougat update. This information was already confirmed by the Santa Clara-based tech company. The update is expected to come in a few weeks' time.

Shield Tablet/Shield Tablet K1. The Shield Tablet is a gaming tablet that was first released in 2014. It is Nvidia's second portable gaming device that runs on Android. Unlike the Shield Portable, the controller is not permanently connected to the screen. Instead, it is sold separately.

In Nov. 2015, Nvidia relaunched it as the Shield Tablet K1. In Aug. 2016, Nvidia officially announced that it was no longer releasing hardware upgrades for its Shield Tablets. It was speculated that the reason for its cancellation was the Nintendo Switch, which is due to be released on Mar. 3, 2017.

CES 2017. Jen-Hsun Huang, Nvidia's CEO, introduced a new and revamped Shield TV at the Consumer Electronic Show. It was unfortunately almost the exact same decide as the original. It even has the same name. However, it was noted that the company's new X1 chip running in it did drastically improve the old one.

Many fans were hoping that there would be some word about the Nvidia Shield Tablet or the Tablet K1. While there was no mention during the CES, Nvidia did confirm via their Google+ account that the update is happening.

In both their forums and in their Google+ account, there was a post about the SHIELD Android TV being released with Android Nougat already installed. One user commented asking if the K1 would be getting a Nougat upgrade. Nvidia's official account replied that the update for the Shield Tablet and Tablet K1 would be released "in a few weeks."

While Shield owners were very happy about this announcement, there was no mention about how this update would affect the Shield's battery issues. The Shield Tablet has gotten a lot of negative criticism about its poor battery life. This issue was noted with the Marshmallow upgrade and some users even downgraded their units to fix it. Hopefully, the Android Nougat update will improve the Nvidia Shield Tablet's poor battery life and battery draining issues.
