The Galaxy S8 is Samsung next flagship smartphone following its hugely successful Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. The handset will be the South Korean giant's answer to Apple's iPhone 8. Both are yet to be released in the market but a number of new exciting features have been revealed. One of them is a wide-angle camera, which is speculated to be sported by Samsung Galaxy S8.

A leaked photo of the S8's case's yesterday revealed a number of holes positioned at the top of the phone. Two of the holes are placed next to each other and have similar size. The left hole is surmised to accommodate a standard camera while the right hole might be made for a wide-angle camera.

This is an ingenious move for Samsung to enable group selfies with the aid of a wider camera angle. The addition of this feature will be confirmed when the S8 launched at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Two previous business moves may be related to the speculated wide angle camera feature. One was Samsung Venture Corp.'s investment in Israeli dual-camera manufacturer Core Photonics. Another was Samsung Electronics' application for patents on dual camera technologies to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.

The dual-lens camera is a growing norm among handset manufacturers. This feature is already in the Apple iPhone 7 and the LG V20. The patent for a dual-camera configuration can make way for a wide-angle and telephoto lens camera in future Samsung handsets including the Galaxy S8. This technology is essential to enable augmented reality which has arrived in mobile phones after being use for years in video gaming and for military applications.

Wide-angle and telephoto lenses are important features in photography. The former is designed for capturing quickly moving objects while the latter is used first for a slowly moving object.
