2018 Volkswagen Atlas Preview: A Crossover SUV Worth Waiting For

Everyone thought that the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas would be the microbus it was expected to be. Even though it isn't, it still is an important vehicle to Volkswagen as its three-row crossover SUV to take on the likes the Honda Pilot and Nissan Pathfinder.

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas. The Atlas is offered in two engine types. It is enormous inside able to accommodate three rows of passenger seats and cargo space. In addition, it is jam-packed with technology features.

The new Atlas will feature an updated touchscreen infotainment system that is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It will also have MirrorLink connectivity. The infotainment system's interface can also be controlled with control knobs and buttons. One can opt for a digital instrument panel and an audio system by Fender.

Safety features can be requested which includes forward collision prevention, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, a parking assistant, and post-collision braking. Adaptive cruise control is also available.

LED headlights are standard on all trims. LED taillights, however, are optional. The front of the Atlas sports a simple two-level grille and boxy headlights. There are a few sharp lines on the hood as well as on the side and the door handles. The rear shares a similarity with the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan with a few differences such as the chrome strip and an embossed Atlas sign. The lower portion of the rear bumper has dual exhaust pipes.

The Atlas comes as either all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. It is produced on Volkswagen's MQB platform which the Tiguan and Golf are, too. The base model Atlas is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine with 238 horsepower. One can opt for the Atlas that sports the more powerful 3.6-liter VR6 engine with 280 horsepower. All Atlas trims have an eight-speed automatic transmission.

There aren't any details surrounding the Atlas's release date or price. The same goes for its interior's measurements. However, it is known that the Volkswagen Atlas will be offered in 5 trim levels of which are currently unknown, too.
