Mazda is contemplating to use its latest SkyActiv engines that use high compression forces to ignite fuel-air mixtures without a spark and improve fuel efficiency by 30 percent. The companies will most likely use these engines in their 2018 Mazda 3 cars.
Left Lane News reports that the SkyActiv gasoline engine employs the homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) technology that uses high compression to generate enough heat that can burn the fuel/air mixture without spark plugs. The technology is derived from diesel engine set-ups and can increase fuel efficiency by 30%.
A Nikkei report says that Mazda will continue to pursue its plans to build car electric cars but expects the new HCCI technology engines to power the majority of Mazda cars in the years to come. The company plans to launch electric vehicles in 2019 and plug-ins in 2021.
Mazda does not have an electric car to offer at present but it leads the Annual Light Duty Fuel Economy Trends as reported by EPA, getting a fleet-wide performance rating of 29.6 miles per gallon for the 2015 model year and a tentative 30.7 miles per gallon for the model year 2017. The company expects to build hybrids using the new technology to target U.S. and European car markets that demand high fuel efficiency in cars.
If the HCCI technology engines can really attain 30 percent fuel efficiency, the new SkyActiv gasoline engine vehicles will be at par with hybrid cars that uses conventional engines. The Mazda SkyActiv engines can easily meet the fuel efficiency standards set by most countries.
Emissions from the new engine will also be low as it burns fuel more efficiently than other engines. Plans are being readied to complement Toyota hybrid cars technology with the SkyActiv HCCI technology.
According to some estimates, the new engine can provide for Mazda3 cars a mileage rating of close to 30 km per liter. This is exceptionally high for gasoline-powered engines. The company will certainly be using these new engines for its Mazda3 2018 cars.
