Andy Rubin and his new company, Essential. According to news website Bloomberg, Rubin and his new company, Essential, will be releasing a premium AI-focused smartphone with the latest in cutting edge technology. The smartphone is expected to rival Google's Pixel and the Apple iPhone.
A prototype of Essential's smartphone has been reported to have a display screen larger than that of the iPhone 7 Plus's. The screen is said to be edgeless in design and will thus have a smaller footprint. The smartphone's design features a ceramic back and metal edges. Another feature of Essential's smartphone would be a 360-degree camera. Essential is reportedly already in talks with Foxconn to manufacture the smartphone and to have it released within the year.
Rubin, a remarkable engineer, co-founded the Android, Inc. back in 2003 with Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. Their intention was to create smarter mobile devices that understood user preferences. Google acquired Android Inc. in 2005 with Rubin and his team staying on to continue developing the now world-famous Android operating system. Rubin eventually left the Android team in 2013 to work on Google's robotics unit before leaving the company the year after.
Essential is, well, essentially a new company aimed to connect multiple devices and will offer a wide range of consumer hardware products including smartphones. Essential is equipped with a team of 40 recruits from both Apple and Google.
Essential is hoping to have their smartphone released and available to consumers in the middle of this year. There are no details surrounding its price yet but it is expected to be around the same price of the iPhone 7, which is $649.00.
