Apple launched its new ad "Take Mine" for iPhone 7 Plus which highlights the ability of the device to capture compelling images that were only available on high-end DSLR cameras. The commercial focused on the Portrait Mode feature of the camera's large variation of the handset.
It was during the Golden Globe Awards when the ad was shown and uses the dual camera of the phone that blurs the background and focuses on the subject. The mode was described as practically magic.
The scene started with a woman who arrived in a Greek village to visit her grandmother. The ladies were later on a café seated and the granddaughter took out her iPhone 7 Plus Rose Gold to capture the moment with her grandmother with the use of the "Depth Effect" that the camera features.
Amazed by the quality and clarity of the photo taken, her excitement caught the attention of other customers in the café that causes a chain-reaction between the locals including children, barbers, fisherman, and musicians who asked for their pictures to be taken. All enjoyed the photography with its fantastic blurred effect.
"Portrait Mode on the iPhone 7 Plus helps you take great portraits by creating a depth-of-field effect that blurs backgrounds and brings faces into beautifully sharp focus. So now, taking a professional-looking portrait is as easy as snapping a photo," as for the video description stated. Apple's image signal processor scrutinizes the scene and adds machine learning ability to acknowledge people in the photo and creates depth map with the two cameras.
The portrait mode comes with numerous caveats. One needs more light and the right distance from the subject to have a lot of contrast between the foreground and background so the subject will stay still and there will be not too many faces in the image. The mode on the iPhone 7 Plus is totally impressive.
