The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the all-new 2013 Ford Fusion a Top Safety Pick earlier today.
To earn a top safety pick, a vehicle must receive a rating of "Good" in a number of different tests and evaluations. These evaluations include side impact, roof strength, dynamic head restraint, offset frontal impact testing according to Ford.
"The new Fusion is another example of Ford's commitment to the highest standards of safety and we are proud that IIHS has recognized these efforts," said Steve Kenner, global director of the Automotive Safety Office to Ford.
The new Fusion includes many different features but the main reason it was named a Top Safety Pick is thanks to the Personal Safety System vehicles come with.
The Personal Safety System includes new safety belt technologies and frontal impact airbags. A total of eight airbags are placed around the vehicle to help provide extra protection for drivers and passengers inside the vehicle just in case there is a crash.
The car also comes equipped with a redesigned, seat-mounted side airbags which incorporates new venting technology to enhance impact protection according to Ford. The Personal Safety System is comprised of a network of different factors working together to help make sure airbags deploy in the event of an accident.
The Restraint Control Module (RCM) transfers data collected by the front crash sensors, front outboard safety belt buckle switches, driver-seat track position and passenger seat weight sensor. The module will then use the collected information and activate the safety belt pretensioners which decides how the front airbags will be released.
The Fusion has a respectable reputation for offering leading fuel economy with a 47 MPG hybrid model and advanced technology that you won't find in other cars.
Some of the features that Fusion cars come equipped with include adaptive cruise control, blind spot information system (BLIS), lane-keeping aids, and active parking assistance. Other aids include an electronic parking brake and hill start assistance.
