Samsung recently unveiled their QLED televisions during CES 2017. However, LG was not impressed by the QLED TV. They explained that it only has one insignificant upside.
OLED vs. QLED. LED television sets use Light Emitting Diodes to backlight an LCD TV. In the past, an ordinary LCD TV used a standard cold-cathode fluorescent light for their backlight.
OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. It is essentially a new type of LED lighting technology that utilized organic compounds. The new technology no longer requires backlighting since each pixel can be individually lit. This allows TV manufacturers to come up with thin and high-resolution display panels with vibrant displays.
LG, Sony, and Panasonic use OLED technology for their latest TV sets. Sony launched their first OLED TV at CES 2017. OLED is a fairly new development but once again Samsung tries to take it up a notch by releasing something "new." Samsung revealed their QLED TVs.
Samsung QLED. QLED stands for Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode. Basically, quantum dots are used to directly supply light to each individual pixel in an LCD display. OLED uses organic compounds while QLED claims to use quantum dots.
While the two are similar in their approach, QLED is an entirely different technology. The quantum dots emit colored light and as such, the hue of the emission can be controlled allowing for a more bright and vibrant picture. In effect, less energy is wasted on bright illumination on the pixels that don't require it.
LG is not impressed by Samsung's QLED technology. According to LG's Display vice chairman, "The only change in Samsung Electronics' new product and the previous one is luminance. In a quantum dot, luminance can vary according to backlight."
Samsung believes these are the best TVs they have produced. The South Korean tech giant believes QLED TVs have a brighter picture with better color. Additionally, the viewing angle has been improved and the company has also released a new range of accessories for their new TVs.
While LG dismisses Samsung QLED TVs, the rest of the world seem pretty excited about it. QLED will be great for HDR and 4K content, which is what all the other CES 2017 devices were about. QLED is definitely a step up offering more vibrant screens that consume less energy.
