The all-new Civic Si will be released early this year. It is Honda's 10th-generation performance economy car. It has a very powerful brother: the all-new 2017 Honda Civic Type-R.
Car enthusiasts across the world are baffled by Honda's choice to release two performance variants of the new Civic. Why would they release both a Si and a Type-R?
Honda split their development of the 10th-generation Civic into two teams. The coupe and sedan were designed and engineered in the U.S. Both of these variants were built with their North American customers in mind. They are not available in Japan.
Honda Civic Si. The Civic Si is also a product of Honda's U.S. division. Available in both a coupe or sedan variant, it was engineered by the same team that brought the all-new 2017 Honda Civic. It will basically be the Honda Civic plus.
The Si will feature an upgraded version of the base's Civic's engine. It will also have better and cutting edge braked, adaptive suspension, a state-of-the-art limited-slip differential, and a more precise shifter for the six-speed manual.
The Civic Si will be the best-selling Honda Civic but more performance-oriented. It will still be a daily driving car. It will be sensible and fuel efficient. But it will also be fun.
Honda Civic Type-R. The Type-R will be a real beast. Previously available only in Europe and Japan, Honda finally gives the U.S. a local Type-R of its own.
The 10th-generation Type-R is the epitome of Honda performance. The Type-R will be assembled in Swindon, England like its ninth-generation predecessor. And also like its predecessor, it will only come in a hatchback variant.
The Type-R won't be an everyday car. It won't be easy to drive and it won't be friendly to the casual driver. Its chassis, suspension, and drivetrain will be optimized to make it a monster on the road. It will expect to be driven only under peak conditions on a perfect road.
The Type-R will have a 2.0-liter turbo four-cycling engine. It will enjoy a significant power boost of a rumored 340 horsepower. The car will be a front wheel drive six-speed manual transmission.
2017 is a great time for Honda Civic fans. Honda has already released the best-selling Civic coupe and sedan last year as well as the hatchback. This year will bring the sensible Honda Civic Si and the monstrous Honda Civic Type-R.
