PlayStation 4 Tops Consoles in the Aftermath of Holiday Sale

The Holiday Season just ended, with a lot of discounted games and consoles for people to buy. The Sony Playstation 4 tops their sales once the holiday seasons are over.

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that their PlayStation 4 console saw an increase in sales after the holiday season in 2016. The console managed to sell 6.2 million units during the holiday season. This is an increase of 9% from the same time period in 2015. The 9% increase in sales brought the total units sold to 53.4 million, equating to the total sales of the console three years since its launch.

The Playstation 4 console was released in November 2013. This served as an important asset to Sony since the company ventured to smartphones. The Playstation 4 rivals Nintendo's WiiU and Microsoft's XBox One. Ever since the release of Playstation 4, many game developers have shifted to creating their games to the console, leaving some of Sony's other products like the Playstation Vita and the Playstation 3 behind.

During the holiday season in 2016, Sony managed to sell more than 50.4 million copies, counting both the digital downloads of games and those that can be bought in retail stores. Discounts and special offers contributed to this factor, seeing that the prices for the Playstation 4 line have dropped at least 20-30% and offers a lot of freebies such as free games or free controllers.

Below is an excerpt of the statement from the President and the Global CEO of Sony, Andrew House: "We will aim to continue the momentum this year by broadening the PS4 title portfolio, further enriching the revolutionary gaming experiences on PlayStation VR and high-quality gaming experience on PlayStation4 Pro, while also expanding network services.  We will remain steadfast in making the PS4 the best place to play."

Sony is planning to continue this flow with their Playstation 4 Pro, Playstation VR, and the Slim version of the Playstation 4. However, they might face a fierce competition this year, with the impending release of Nintendo's much-awaited console, the Nintendo Switch.
