Norton by Symantec made an announcement on Tuesday which stated that the Norton Core secure router is now available for smart devices and takes the home security aspect to a whole new level. The router protects up to 20 PCs, Macs, Android and iOS smartphones and tablets on a home network. It also protects unlimited devices connected to the Internet of Things.
The firmware of the system will be updated in the background automatically. However, this is not true for the firmware on connected devices, said Ameer Karim, general manager of consumer IoT security at Symantec, reported Tech News World.
Norton Core Router: The Core Functions
The chief function of the router is to scan incoming and outgoing network packets across the home network, quarantines infected connected devices to a separate network, and alerts the user. The system also provides a security score on a real time basis for the network and the connected devices. After that, the system also gives users tips on strengthening security settings, reported Friday Posts.
To add to the features, the router has customizable parental controls. The users of the device will be able to remotely manage their home devices by using a connected mobile device. The system also ensures that lost or stolen smartphones won't pose a security problem. "We're cloud connected," Karim explained, so "users can instantly change the password." The users will also be able to add a PIN or Touch ID credentials.
The Norton Core uses the MU-MIMO technology. It supports Wave 2 WiFi. It can simultaneously transmit at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. However, it is of the opinion that the system may have to be further upgraded to support other wireless interfaces, like Thread, Zigbee and Bluetooth.
The added advantage of Norton Core is that it supports speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps for 4K streaming and lag-free gaming. The router also ensures that the devices connected get stellar WiFi from anywhere in the home as it combines an omnidirectional antenna design with advanced beam. The system can be used to pause the home network as required. It can also identify which devices can and cannot be paused. Devices such as alarm systems, door locks, IP cameras, healthcare devices and appliances won't be paused.
Consumers who wish to experience Norton Core can preorder now. The shipping of the device will begin in summer in the U.S. The router is priced at US$200, which includes a one-year complimentary subscription to Norton Core Security Plus. The subscription will cost $10 a year after that.
