Starting at 7 a.m. today, a Newport Exxon gas station located near the Holland Tunnel will be offering gas for only $1.84 a gallon to the first 150 customers.
The station chose the height of rush hour to run the publicity stunt in an effort to attract more motorists to the station accord to The Star-Ledger. The stunt was done to show how the drastic increase in gas prices over the last four years has hurt gas stations from being competitive.
The New Jersey Gasoline C-Store Automotive Association announced the event in a press release on their website and it has since been picked up by newspapers and radio stations alike to make sure people are aware of the limited time offer.
"$1.84 was the average price of gasoline less than four years ago," said the NJGCA in the press release announcing the publicity stunt. "This NJGCA member, who operates one of the last gasoline stations before the Holland Tunnel, will highlight to the public how dramatically gas prices have increased over the last several years."
The station is located near the entrance to the Holland Tunnel on the corner of Jersey Avenue and 12th Street.
According to The Star-Ledger, 50 NJGCA members who own Lukoil gas stations in NJ met in September and decided to sell gas at their stations for as high as $8.99 for a whole day to draw attention to the Moscow-based oil corporation. This was done to show the company how ridiculous the price of gas has become and what things may be like if it is allowed to get worse.
The stations saw a drastic decline in customers that day, thus making their point to their superiors.
"Whether it is through dramatically increased or dramatically lowered prices," said Sal Risalvato, NJGCA spokesman in the press release, "NJGCA members are willing to do what it takes raise public awareness about the pain felt by motor fuel retailers due to high gasoline prices."
The owner of the gas station Meer Fazaldin has yet to comment about the event.
