Caterham is thinking of building a new sports car with front engine, rear wheel drive layout, fully closed cabin sports car to sell along with Seven model. The British firm is looking to enter a more mainstream area of the car market with a new model something it tried in the 1990s with the Caterham 21.

The car would have a more conventional shape than the Seven as MacDonald suggested extending its appeal. This sports car will add to the British carmaker's line-up rather than a direct replacement for the iconic Seven. It would also use a naturally aspirated engine.

However, the company's core desire is to maintain the multi praised seven, so any fully enclosed model is likely to be an addition to the lineup, rather than a direct replacement for the Seven. MacDonald told Autocar that the company needs to have a mainstream and modern body shape to ensure that it has broadest possible market appeal. It is also important to get the right engine and product for our customer and it also has to have Caterham DNA.

Caterman would build the car in a joint structure with another manufacturer because the company does not have the financial resources to fund on its own. The company is currently in talks with an interested partner. As Graham MacDonald, CEO of Caterham stated that the best thing for Caterman now is probably a joint venture which any new product is a big investment for a small business like the Caterham.

The companies are actively thinking about what is the next step to the Seven. Caterham is still on a new, more conventional model to flesh out its model range. They still have a number of ideas involving a number of other businesses. And yet, nothing is close to the conclusion but certainly, Volkswagen would love to have another product to follow on from it.
