Samsung Display signed an agreement with Apple to supply AMOLED panels for the latter's iPhone 8. The Cupertino company plans to launch the handset in 2017. Taiwan-based supply chain makers revealed that Samsung Display will provide 20 million AMOLED panels in a month.
According to DigiTimes, Apple will offer the iPhone 8 in 4.7-, 5.5-, and 5.8-inch displays in second half of 2017. The TFT-LCD panels will be used in the former two, while the AMOLED will be installed on the 5.8-inch handsets. Apple is expected to deliver 60-70 million units of AMOLED iPhone in 2017.
Meanwhile, the sensors for use in iPhone 8's AMOLED panels and bonding of touch sensors and AMOLED display panels will come from Nissha Printing. However, there is no information yet if Samsung Display, TPK Holding, or General Interface Solution tapped Nissha Printing.
Apple's move to come up with larger displays for iPhone 8 surprised many tech industry observers. The iPad-maker is known for mocking larger phone sizes. Its previous iPhones did not provide optimized user experience and failed to take advantage of the larger screen size of the iPhone Plus range.
According to Forbes magazine, the 5.8-inch display may include the edges. The iPhone 8 is speculated to have "all curve" display, which is similar to the dual curved 5.5-inch Galaxy S7 Edge.
The frenzy surrounding the release of iPhone 8 might prop up the demand for Apple's flagship handsets. Sluggish global sales forced to Apple reduce iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus production by 10 percent in early 2017.
iPhone 7's lack of compelling features is the main factor why it failed to garner interests. Despite the gains made by Apple from Samsung's Galaxy Note 7, global sale targets were not met.
Apple's next-generation iPhone 8 will be released to the market later in 2017. It could feature beefed up internals and an iterative update on the design of the iPhone 7.
