Tesla will once again count on their very first model, the Tesla Roadster, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on his Twitter account yesterday that the Roadster is coming back. And it is coming back more impressive than ever as the Tesla Roadster eyes to be one of the fastest and most powerful cars in the world.
Eliminated from the range in late 2012 to concentrate all efforts of the brand in the development and launch of the Model S, the Tesla Roadster was the first vehicle developed and launched by the brand. Based on the lightweight aluminum frame of the Lotus Elise, the Tesla team aims to revive the Roadster concept of an electric vehicle.
This is not the first time that talks about the return of the Tesla Roadster have been brought up, nor the first Musk mentioned it, but this time, the technology entrepreneur has officially stated it in his social media account according to Jalopnik. Asked by a Twitter user about the Tesla Roadster return, Musk simply answered that it will come in a few years.
Tesla also has hinted that the all-electric convertible Tesla Roadster will be even quicker than the top-of-the-line Model S, which is currently the fastest member of the company’s lineup. This will make it as fast as the Mclaren P1 according to CarBuzz and closer to Bugatti Chiron's performance.
Most people may not remember, but the reason Tesla chose a sports format for its first car model is that it was the continuation of an existing project, the AC tzero, propelling the most powerful and advanced electric vehicle at the time. Some of the investors in this project founded Tesla and was later joined by Elon Musk.
Despite having the technology to specifically develop the Tesla Roadster, Tesla's biggest problem was to transform it into a product that was not only marketable but profitable as well. Suppliers of the main components were in different parts of the globe and the assembly process was initially planned at Lotus headquarters while the body was manufactured in France, which explains the main reason for its dismissal.
Fast forward to today, Tesla has all the ability and the funds to develop the Tesla Roadster again, but we all just have to wait. A future Tesla Roadster will not arrive until at least 2020.
