With three years in the market, a next generation Toyota Corolla is already being expected. As early as now, news and rumors about it are already spreading. The latest is that the next gen Toyota Corolla may be powered by a BMW engine. The Japanese manufacturer is already preparing the next version of the mid-range top selling sedan, expected to hit the market in mid-2018.
The two brands announced a partnership in 2011, which only began to take shape in 2013, when it was revealed that they would create a new sportscar together. This model will be the new Supra for Toyota and, for BMW, the successor to Z4. In 2014, BMW started to supply diesel engines to Toyota, while the Japanese brand would help the German automakers produce hybrid systems for Europe. Apparently, they will be working together for the next generation Toyota Corolla too.
Toyota Corolla is the best-selling car in history. It has sold over 40 million units in its five decades on the market. However, the Corolla is also the perfect definition of a well-built and affordable vehicle that lacks passion. The next generation Toyota Corolla goes to BMW to give it a touch of spice. The intent is to make the Toyota Corolla gain more appeal by leveraging the technology of BMW, according to CarScoops.
The next generation Toyota Corolla should be offered with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, a 1.5-liter hybrid, a 1.2-liter gasoline turbo and the current 1.8-liter petrol VVT-i (flex in our market). The BMW engine could be offered in a more expensive top-of-the-line version, possibly with more sports appeal, something not available by the current generation. It might use the 2.0-liter turbocharged 184 hp found in the 320i version of the Series 3.
The next generation Toyota Corolla will be built from the new Toyota New Global Architecture platform, according to DigitalTrends. This is the same as the Prius hybrid, with gains in rigidity and safety compared to the model currently offered. The new Corolla is also expected to increase its wheelbase to improve internal space, but without changing the overall length of the vehicle.
The twelfth generation of Corolla will be produced in several factories on a global scale. The suspension of production in Canada will be offset by a new factory in Mexico. Further details regarding the next generation Toyota Corolla are expected to be released by mid-2017.
