V2V communication has become a hot issue as none other than the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently pushed to make it a standard requirement for all vehicles. This rule came into fruition as the said government agency in charge of road safety realized that the future safety of autonomous or self-driving cars lies in technology that will allow them to communicate with other vehicles.
The first cars to be released equipped with a V2V communication tool are the 2017 Cadillac CTS and probably Mercedes Benz 2017 E-Class. Whether it will be the 2017 Cadillac CTS or Mercedes Benz 2017-E-Class that will have V2V capability is not that important. What matters most is the fact that the role of V2V communication in road safety has been recognized. This technology is greatly important in driverless cars, where the vehicle is not controlled by a driver but only by a software or program, according to Mashable.
However, there are some doubts as to whether the V2V communication technology that has been developed within 12 years will still be relevant. The NHTSA has been pushing the use of short-range communication. But there are too many limitations on the capability of short-range communication and the fact that it might be too outdated for a car as modern as the 2017 Cadillac CTS might require development of more advanced technology, according to Automotive News.
With the release of the 2017 Cadillac CTS, the effectiveness of V2V communication technology will be tested as to its effectiveness in preventing road accidents. As can be recalled, there were two road mishaps that involved autonomous cars recorded that might have been prevented if the cars used V2V communication. One was a collision that involved a Google driverless car and the other involved a Tesla Model S, according to Forbes.
V2V communication could have prevented these road mishaps, saving property and life. The move of NHTSA to require V2V communication in all vehicles might be effective as long the right technology is used.
