Volkswagen has released the teaser of a new version of its electric minibus platform, which will be revealed at the North American Car Show in Detroit next month (if not sooner at CES). This all-electric van concept is combining the company's past and future.

This is the second vehicle in the I.D. family and shall also be based on the Modulat Electric Drive Kit (MEB) platform, a new scalable platform which will underpin a number of new electric vehicles from VW, according to Autoguide. The first I.D. concept is a small vehicle, which, VW says, can travel about 370 miles on a single charge.

Moreover, at different times in the past, Volkswagen has advertised: 101kWh battery, 373 miles of range, electrically retractable steering wheel which disappears into the dashboard, dual motor, all-wheel drive, and "laser scanners, ultrasonic radar sensors and cameras monitoring other road users and surroundings," according to Electrek.

Among the exterior design elements of the Volkswagen electric microbus is an upright front end with what appears to be an almost vertical windscreen and minimal overhang. It supports a large illuminated VW badge and V-shaped feature line which recall the detailing of Volkswagen's original MPV. Other cues include a multi window glasshouse, sheer unadorned flanks and an upright rear, says Drive.

One of up to five advanced zero emission models being considered for production as part of the German carmaker's recently-announced Future 2025 plan which targets up to 500,000 electric car sales by the middle of the next decade, the second I.D. concept showcases a drivetrain with two electric motors and four-wheel drive capability.

Volkswagen is not commenting yet on further details of the drivetrain for the electric Microbus inspired concept. However, it confirms the new MPV shall receive similar connectivity and autonomous driving functions as with the original I.D. concept.
