General Motors Co. will introduce a redesigned Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Terrain in January at the Detroit Auto Show. The crossover sport-utility vehicles' debut is an effort to jump-start the company's participation in the U.S. market.

The Chevrolet Traverse, a seven-seat crossover, together with the smaller GMC Terrain, which will be revealed next year, has not been revamped since 2009. This is because the automaker has been "juggling" its engineering priorities in the years that followed its bankruptcy filing, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The new GMC Terrain will feature a more rugged look that could signal GMC's strategy to take on the fast-growing Jeep brand, according to enthusiasts who have seen it. GMC executives say that the company could even begin attracting the off-road enthusiast group. GMC has not made any official comment on the rumored debuts of the GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Traverse.

Neither the Chevrolet Traverse nor the GMC Terrain have been redesigned in seven years. Typically, automakers try to release a new generation roughly every five years.

According to Automotive News, analysts expect that the Chevrolet Traverse will share its platform with the 2017 GMC Acadia, which debuted earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show. It has not been fully updated since the 2007 model, and is a few pounds lighter than the first generation, although it will not trim down in overall size as dramatically as the Acadia did.

Chevrolet plans to position a new crossover between the Equinox and Traverse, maybe in 2018. Recently, GMC CFO Chuck Stevens said that GMC had "the oldest crossover lineup in the industry," according to Motor Trends. There is no concrete detail on the new Chevrolet Traverse yet, but the new GMC Terrain is set for a 6 p.m. unveiling on January 8, 2017 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit at 4454 Woodward Avenue, according to mlive.
