A car sliced in half when it struck trees near the Long Island Parkway early Monday morning, killing four passengers instantly.
Joseph Beer, a 17-year-old, was driving his Subaru along a sharp curve on the Long Island Parkway a little faster than he should have been and accidentally sent his car flying off the road and into the woods. The car then wrapped around a tree, tossed the four passengers out of the car and split completely in half due to the impact.
18-year-olds Chris Khan, Peter Anthony, Darian Ramnarine and Neil Rajaba, were all pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Beer is somehow still alive, and was taken to a local hospital for medical attention.
NY state law strictly prohibits drivers who only have their learner's permit from driving between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. without the supervision of someone over the age of 21 who also has a driver's license.
Police have not come to any conclusions as to if anything else played a factor into the crash such as alcohol or drugs, or if it was simply just a matter of an inexperienced driver going way to fast on a dangerous road.
The accident occurred at 4 a.m. on the Southern State Parkway and caused the road to close for over five hours due to excessive amount of debris that scattered all over the parkway. The road closure was even worse considering Monday was a holiday and many people were home from work. The roadway didn't reopen until later that day around 10 a.m.
Charges against Beer have not been filed yet, but he is lucky to even be alive after the crash. Beer's parents had just bought him a brand new 2012 Subaru Impreza as a gift for graduating Richmond High School.
The spot that the car went flying over is known as "Dead Man's Curve" to locals for being a notorious spot for car crashes. This accident however is hands down the worse to occur by far in that area.
