Ford put on a demonstration for their new Interceptor models Tuesday which are designed specifically for police officers in the U.S. The vehicle is expected to completely replace the Crown Victoria models in around four years.
For the first time ever, Ford will sell both a sedan and utility vehicle designed for law enforcement officials.
"I call it a little tank on wheels," said Lisa Teed, a marketing manager at Ford Motor Co. during a vehicle demonstration Tuesday at a U.S. Cellular Field parking lot.
Some of the special aspects the Interceptor will feature include a V6 engine, which brings better gas mileage than a V8, bullet-proof front doors and a gun vault in the trunk of the vehicle. It also features a new all-wheel drive system designed to make the vehicle easier to handle in situations like snow or car chases.
The car is being manufactured at the Ford Assembly Plant and has already added around 1,200 jobs in Chicago, IL.
The basic model is being sold at $20,000 meanwhile the utility version is priced at approximately $25,000.
15,500 orders of the Interceptor have been made by police stations all around the nation. Canadian police departments have placed over 800 orders for the vehicles as well.
The new Interceptors are replacing the Crown Victoria which has been used by police officers for 20 years. Experts like Teed believe that it could take four years for the Interceptor to completely replace the Crown Victoria models, based on tight budgets police departments face.
The cars will not be available for purchase to the general public.
