Galaxy Note 5 was rumored to be in the process of getting an upgrade with the 7.0 Nougat Android replacing its old OS. The move was taken after Galaxy Note 7, which had the official Android 7.0 Nougat Beta, was recalled because of defective batteries.

As a result, Samsung Galaxy Note 5 remained as the latest version of the series, and it was chosen to get the upgrade that the Note 7 should have had if it was not recalled due to defective batteries. The Note 7 fiasco made Samsung take a proactive stance with regards to upgrading their hand sets. A leak about a Galaxy Note 5 having testing the Android Nougat software intensified the rumor and it was taken as an indication that Samsung was gearing towards improving the Galaxy Note 5 OS, according to International Business Times. With the new features that the software was known for, it was expected that sales of Galaxy Note 5 will step up to compensate for the company's loss in the Galaxy Note 7.

In fact, the veracity of the rumor was proven with the arrival of the first Galaxy beta Nougat firm ware arrived last November 9 for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge and these two handsets would be the first to run the Android Nougat. The firmware for the Galaxy Note 5 was expected to arrive later and so, it would have the Nougat as early as the first week of January next year, according to Android Authority.

Samsung hopes that upgrading the Galaxy Note 5 would keep customers who had bad experience with the Galaxy Note 7 from shifting to other mobile phone brands. The new features offered on the upgraded OS would help rectify the failure of the Note 7, according to Tech Times.

With the latest upgrade, Samsung would be able to compete with big players in the mobile phone industry, including Apple, its closest rival.
