Nokia, after several years of silence, is now making noise about its new handsets, two Android-based smartphones, that run Google Nougat Android Software slated to be released around the middle of 2017. The two handsets will be presented in the Mobile World Congress in February next year in Barcelona, Spain.

Nokia promised its loyal fans a handset that retains the original brand's look and feel while getting upgrades that will make it compete with current leading brands Samsung and Apple. While details about the new Android phones were scarce, there were talks about Nokia making a handset that is water resistant with a finger print scanner and highly sensitive cameras, according to CNET. These features were absent in the Lumia, and was believed to be one of the reasons why it failed in the market.

It can be recalled that Nokia was acquired by Microsoft in 2013 but was relinquished by the company after the Lumia smartphones running Microsoft Windows failed in the market. Consequently, Nokia signed a partnership with another Finnish company HMD, which will serve as the home for Nokia smartphones under a ten year licensing agreement. HMD will be benefitting from the brand and management experience of Nokia, according to phone analyst Ben Wood.

There were also talks about the company making not just two but four smartphones and all will have slightly different prices and technological specifications to meet varied customers requirements. HMD believed that high customer awareness of the brand and loyalists' sympathizing with Nokia regarding the Microsoft deal, would be patronizing the company's latest product, according to Digital Trends.

With the new smartphones powered by Google Nougat Android software, expectations were very high regarding these two products. In addition, speculations had been growing that the new Nokia smartphones might displace the two major players in the mobile phone industry, Samsung and Apple, in the near future.
