BMW goes artistic as it unveiled its 2016 Art Car creations at the Miami Art Basel last Wednesday night. BMW M6 GTLM Art Car number 19 is the brain child of John Baldessari, a legendary LA-based artist, along with BMW this year.
BMW Art Car highlights the unique works of conceptual and legendary artists, which are showcased during Art Basel shows. For quite some time now, BMW has presented this concept in Miami and Hongkong and involves 17 internationally renowned artists. BMW further makes history this year when it allowed international spectators to see the wonderful and contemporary creations through M6 GTLM, the 19th BMW Art Car designed by Baldessari.
What's with 2016's BMW M6 GTLM Art Car? Baldessari had some challenges designing his first BMW Art Aar creation. He said in one of his interviews that his work of art got a three-dimensional design using blue, red, green, and yellow colors. Despite having difficulties in perfecting his art on all angles of the BMW M6 GTLM, he managed to be happy and proud on how it turned out, THE VERGE reported.
The pay made the infamous artist to work with BMW for the said Art Car --- Baldessari's answer when asked why he did it, with pun intended. However, it was more of the challenge that got him in since he has never put any of his designs yet on a car. FORTUNE also described that based on his trademark and conceptualization, he explained that the red dot on BMW M6 GTLM's roof is to make it more recognizable like that of racing cars.
So, does this mean BMW intends to produce 3D Art car prototypes to add to its branding portfolio and lineup? For the last 18 Art Basel shows that BMW Art Car appeared in, the automaker has not made any statement about venturing into art cars as its variant. The creation is a representation and commitment of BMW's participation as Art Basel's global partner, according to designboom's blog post.
Thus, the chance to see a BMW Art Car in the showroom is something uncertain yet.
