BMW is gearing up to launch a hot version of its new mid-sized X3 SUV, the BMW X3 M, and there's hearsay that it will come with M3 power when it debuts in 2018. With BMW's mid-size SUV slated to launch in the near future, speculations and leaks surrounding the purported BMW X3 M are expected to run rampant all over the internet.

Auto Express' spy photographers recently spotted what looked like a potential performance model bearing the moniker, BMW X3 M, testing at Nurburgring. The third-generation X3 will grab a spot in an expanding X-range of the German automaker's SUVs, going toe-to-toe with the Porsche Macan and Audi Q5 when it hits the retail showrooms mid-2017 --- with a shorter X2 and a seven-seater X7 also slated to arrive. 

Here's why it is apt to deem the BMW X3 M as a Porsche Macan Turbo rival: With the arrival of the X2, BMW X3 will no longer remain the entry-level forerunner of the BMW X-range. Reliable sources told the publication that a hot M Performance X3 model is in the works. However, the BMW X3 is not likely to undergo a radical cosmetic overhaul, but is expected to sport a jaw-dropping design. Although the development mule wears heavy masking, leaked shots also hint at an aggressive looking BMW SUV, sporting extended and sculpted bumpers coupled with enlarged side skirts. Right above the rear window, a new rear spoiler is seen as well. 

While BMW execs have debunked speculations hinting that a full-blown BMW X3 M model is in the offing, Autocar suggests that a high-performance variant of the vehicle is likely to receive about 425bhp from the same turbocharged 3.0L in-line six-cylinder engine employed in the new M3. If this comes to fruition, BMW will be in a position to compete with the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GLC63 and Porsche Macan Turbo. The new X3 is likely to hit the road in the UK before 2017 ends; however, the BMW model is not likely to be up for grabs until 2018.
