'Amityville: The Awakening' News: Will It Ever Be Released?

It is typical for films to remain stuck in limbo during development and production, as a myriad of problems may force things to come to a halt, like budget cuts or cast and crew members having to leave. For "Amityville: The Awakening," however, it has passed development, even releasing a trailer to horror-hungry fans. But two years later, it still has yet to be released.

The film was first announced three years ago as the next installment in the "Amityville" horror franchise, based on a real home in Amityville, New York, where previous residents had claimed to be experiencing the supernatural at work. Then, "Amityville: The Awakening: was slated for a January 2015 release. Later on, however, the release was moved to April 2016, according to Cinema Blend. Early this year, it got pushed back yet again by its producers, The Weinstein Company.

As of writing, its current release date is projected for January 6, 2017, in theaters worldwide, according to GamenGuideThe reason why "Amityville: The Awakening" was pushed back to 2017 was because the Weinstein Company wanted to focus all their promotional efforts on "Sing Street," a musical that had also been slated for an April release, just weeks after "Amityville" was supposed to hit theaters.

Sensing their films were bound to compete against one another, one of them had to go. It remains puzzling, however, why "Amityville" had to be pushed back by almost an entire year. As Cinema Blend reported, the January 2017 calendar for films is currently a crowded one, with the latest "Friday the 13th" film also set for release then. Other horror/thrillers set to premiere in January are "Resident Evil" and an M. Night Shyamalan feature.

Patiently-waiting fans are sitting tight, however, because the decision to push back the "Amityville: The Awkening" April release date came less than a month before it was set to premiere. This casts a shadow of doubt on the January date. "Amityville: The Awakening" stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, who plays a single mother of three and moves her family into a home with a history. Bella Thorne co-stars as one of her daughters who ultimately discovers the secrets behind the house.
