'Assassin's Creed' News: A Virtual Reality Experience Could Be Coming To A Theater Near You

AMC theaters in four American cities, namely Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco and Austin, will be screening virtual reality (VR) experiences based on the much-anticipated "Assassin's Creed" full-length feature. The installations will be available for viewing pleasure from December 2nd to January 1st, and will be brought to viewers through a 20th Century Fox, AMD and Alienware partnership.

The theaters that will run the VR experience will also have free Oculus Rift kiosks displaying the video, according to The Verge. Those who don't live near participating theater need not fret, as it will also be released after its premiere through Oculus Video, Samsung Gear VR headsets and Facebook, but as a 360-degree video rather than a VR experience. The short video will debut at The Game Awards. The following are the theaters that will be home to the VR installations over the next month following the premiere:

  • Century City 15 - Los Angeles, California
  • Orange 30 - Orange, California
  • Lincoln Square 13 - New York City
  • 34th Street 14 - New York City
  • Barton Creek 14 - Austin, Texas
  • Metreon 16 - San Francisco, California

Those who participate will be able to engage in a parkour run that allows them to observe the environment surrounding them, including Assassin Aguilar, played by Oscar-nominated actor Michael Fassbender, who appears for an estimated 15 seconds. The premise of the video, and upcoming film, is that Fassbender gains access to his genetic memories, leading him to experience firsthand the life of one of his ancestors in 15th Century Spain.

Fassbender's character, Callum Lynch, finds that his ancestor belonged to an enigmatic secret society known as the Assassins. By taking over his body, Callum learns abilities that equip him for the fight of his life, according to Comicbook. The film, which sees Fassbender costarring alongside Oscar-winning actress Marion Cottilard, will come to theaters on Dec. 21.
