Nikola One Electric Truck: A Massive 1,200 Mile Range Game-Changing Vehicle

Nikola Motor Company unveiled on Friday its hydrogen-electric Class 8 semi-truck in Salt Lake City, Utah, the first vehicle of its kind and a real game changer for both trucks and electric vehicles. Called the Nikola One, it packs in a massive range of 1,200 miles as automakers dabbling in electric vehicles are still scrambling to equip cars with ranges of more than 250 miles.

The power behind the Nikola One does not stop there, however, as it also boasts 2,000 pound-feet of torque and 1,000 horsepower, according to CNET's Roadshow. The semi is powered by six electric motors that send power to the wheels through a two-speed transmission. This is especially impressive when compared to the D13 diesel engine from Volvo Trucks, which has up to 500 horsepower and 1,450 to 1,850 pound-feet of torque.

In fact, Nikola has claimed that the power behind the Nikola One is double the amount of any diesel truck on the road today, according to Green Car ReportsThe interior is just as stellar, including a 40-inch curved 4K TV, Wifi and 4G LTE connectivity, a freezer, microwave and refrigerator. In addition, buyers can choose between including one or two full-sized beds in the electric truck. Visibility has also improved in the Nikola One, which sets itself apart from previous trucks by providing a panoramic glass windshield and high-definition cameras and radars that provide live feeds of the semi.

The best thing about the Nikola One? It manages to be an all-powerful, long-range vehicle with a grand total of zero emissions, using hydrogen fuel cells to produce electricity. The company, realizing that hydrogen is more difficult to come by, has pledged to build an extensive network of hydrogen stations. The building will begin in January 2018, with 364 stations set to open by the end of 2019. The Nikola One truck is slated for production by 2020.
