Mazda is no stranger to the electric revolution. Brands like Mercedes or Volkswagen are already working on it. Not to mention that others such as Nissan and Tesla Motors are already a reference in the segment. This is why Mazda had announced at the recently concluded Los Angeles Auto Show that their Mazda electric cars are coming. Mark the calendars as 2019 will be the year of Mazda in the EV segment.
Under the premise that electric car sales will range around 10 percent of total registrations in 2020, Kiyoshi Fujiwara, Head of Research and Development of Mazda, stressed the importance of getting Mazda in the game. As a matter of fact, onlookers could probably see Mazda electric cars sooner rather than later. Nothing is official yet at the moment, but according to WSJ, Mazda is already working on their Mazda electric cars and will be possible, thanks to a collaboration agreement with Toyota. Fujiwara has already made clear that the project is at a very initial state.
For now, there are no details on whether we would get new Mazda electric cars or an "electrified" version of any of the models that currently make up the range of Mazda. However, the fact that Fujiwara commented on the possibility that the new electric vehicle company does not need a specific platform because "no need to mount large battery packs" makes us think about the option to develop an electric version of any of the current models. GreenCarReports claims that Mazda electric cars will "include a range extender at least as an option."
The report further stated, "the range extender could be a Wankel rotary engine, something Mazda has demonstrated on one of its previous prototypes." It is worth nothing that Mazda had already made its baby steps in the EV segment with the Mazda Demio in Japan. It is a pilot project to collect information and data on driving habits of the Japanese and the main problems which should address the drivers of an electric vehicle. 100 units had been manufactures with range of about 200 kilometers. If this could be the basis, it seems that the future of Mazda electric cars look bright.
