Volkswagen Arteon Revealed: Four Months Ahead Of Official Debut

Volkswagen unveiled its all-new Arteon, the automaker's projected star at the Geneva Motor Show next March, and hinted that the premium-level vehicle could be Volkswagen's new flagship car. This is after it just recently discontinued production of its Passat CC four-door coupe, but the company stressed that more than a replacement, the Arteon is on a whole new level from its predecessor.

Volkswagen revealed the premium saloon in a sketch of the Arteon, which gets its name from 'art' (an ode to the car's stylish lines) and 'eon' (signaling the more luxurious feel of the new model), according to Car Advice. The sketch of the Volkswagen Arteon unveiled a sleek, low four-door coupe reminiscent of a Mercedes CLS.

The model it replaces, the Passat CC, is one of Volkswagen's longest-running. The sedan began production in 2007, hit Australian markets in 2009 and received a makeover at the front and rear ends in 2011. Despite the upgrades it received over its tenure, however, Volkswagen insists that the Arteon is a distinctively more upmarket model.

In fact, the German automaker is positioning the Arteon as direct competition to the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, and will likely be sold at close to $40,000, according to Auto Express. This is more expensive than the CC, which was priced at about $5,000 lower.

Volkswagen also said the Arteon would be the pioneer in a new brand look that is "horizontally accentuated." It will feature LED exterior lights, frameless windows and a grille that moves into the headlamps. The premium vehicle will also be more generous with space, at about 1,700 liters, in the rear row.

Under the hood, the Volkswagen Arteon will carry the MQB platform currently being used by many of the automaker's vehicles, such as its Golf Range and standard Passat. Driver assists and other semi-autonomous elements will also be integrated into the upmarket car.
