Christmas might have just arrived early for Star Wars fans. In an official @StarWars tweet, Disney announced that ticket sales for the new movie will begin on Monday.
"Star Wars: Rogue One" is a prequel and a spin-off to the popular franchise; Star Wars has one of the largest fan bases all over the world. According to USA Today, tickets can be bought as early as 12:01 a.m. on Monday. The movie will start screening on Dec. 16 in the United States; in the United Kingdom, fans are even more elated because they get to see the movie a day earlier --- on Dec. 15.
The movie breaks tradition by telling a non-Jedi-centric story. Rogue One is set right before the original 1977 Star Wars film. It stars Felicity Jones as Rebel spy cum military leader Jyn Erso, Diego Luna as Rebel agent Cassian Andor, Alan Tudyk as Andor's security droid, and more notable actors.
The only question hanging over the producers' head is if Rogue One is capable of surpassing, or at least matching, the previous Star Wars movie's global sales. "The Force Awakens" was able to sell over $100 million in advance tickets alone and had a whopping $248 million in sales on its first weekend. It totaled over $2 billion in ticket sales worldwide.
The movie may be considered a risky move, money-wise; The Force Awakens was able to bring in the big bucks because it featured major Star Wars characters such as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa --- who are well-loved by fans all over the world. In contrast, Rogue One might be a tougher push because it features a story not revolving on Jedis alone.
Can Rogue One hit the mark? One will just have to wait and see.
