NextEV has kept a lid on details surrounding its upcoming electric hypercar, set to stage its world premiere in London next week, but it appears even the Chinese carmaker couldn't stand the suspense. They released an image on Monday revealing the design of the hypercar's headlights, a month after it had been seen in the UK when it was tested.
When its official debut comes on Nov. 21, the hypercar will be the first in a line of cars being designed by NextEV after they rose to prominence during the worldwide Formula E championship in 2014. Although this is the first official image of the electric vehicle, Autocar reported it previously unveiled a sketch of the car on social media.
The image leaves much to the imagination but remains indicative of the hypercar's sleek profile and futuristic finishes. Even more impressive, however, is its powerful build: NextEV has promised the hypercar's electric powertrain will generate more than 1,360bhp, the equivalent of one megawatt of power.
The late Martin Leach, former president of Ford and head of NextEV until his passing this month, claimed the car would break boundaries and set a new industry standard for the performance of electric vehicles. It is anticipated to be competitive across the market, being able to hold a candle to similar vehicles like the McLaren P1, LaFerrari, Aston Martin AM-RB 001 and Mercedes-AMG hypercar.
The hypercar will be sold in small volumes at its launch with a nearly seven-figure price tag, according to Auto Express. NextEV is hoping to make a splash with its hypercar, enabling it to eventually mass market the vehicle in China and expand its limited footprint in Europe and the United States.
"The first car is designed to attract attention and to show what we can do from a technology standpoint," Leach said. He denied similarities between their vehicle and Tesla's, saying in NextEV's hypercar would reach a level of accessibility and convenience that was unseen in the electric car market.
