Porsche will debut the latest-generation 911 Carrera 4 at the Paris International Motor Show on September 29, and will release it for sale in the US in early 2013. Porsche's latest all-wheel drive offering is touted by the company as lighter and more agile than its predecessors.
Carrera 4 buyers have four options, as Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S both come in a coupe or a convertible. The models have the advantage of the latest PTM (Porsche Traction Management) all-wheel drive system, which Porsche says delivers even better performance on a wide variety of surfaces than the previous system, but with as much as 16 percent greater fuel efficiency.
The Carrera 4 has a wider rear section than its two-wheel drive counterparts, with larger wheels and wheel housing. It is up to 143 pounds lighter than the previous Carrera 4.
A seven-speed manual gearbox is standard; and the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) seven-speed gearbox, which features both manual and automatic modes, is an option. The all-wheel drive 911s have the same suspension, engines, and gearboxes as the Carrera 2s.
The Carrera 4 has a 3.4-liter, 350-horspower engine, capable of 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds if it's the coupe version and 4.5 if it's the cabriolet. The coupe has a top speed of 177 mph and the cabriolet of 175, depending on how it's equipped. EPA-estimated fuel consumption is also slightly different between the coupe and cabriolet, at 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway for the coupe and 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway for the cabriolet.
The Carrera 4 S has a 3.8-liter rear-mounted boxer engine that delivers 400 horsepower, allowing acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds for the coupe and 4.1 seconds for the cabriolet; and a top speed of 185 mph (coupe) and 183 mph (cabriolet), again depending on equipment. Fuel consumption is estimated at 19 mpg city/ 26 mpg highway for both coupe and cabriolet.
A new menu feature now allows drivers of the Carrera 4 to see exactly how the PTM is distributing power. Adaptive cruise control is also now available across the 911 range.
The 2013 Carrera 4 will start at $91,030, and the 911 Carrera 4 cabriolet at $102,930. The 911 Carrera 4S will start at $105,630, and the 4S cabriolet at $117,530.
