2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD PRO Off-Road Review: Manual VS Automatic Transmission [VIDEO]

The 2017 Toyota Tacoma time and time again tops the list for pick-up sales. These utility trucks or UTEs have become a livelihood if not a household staple for families. It seems that it doesn't need to prove itself anymore. The Japanese pick-up hasn't failed its content owners worldwide.

It is just fit to pit it against no other than itself. The 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD PRO was put in a 3-way off-road test. The test comprised of three off-road terrains. There are the rally course, the climb or descent trail, and the rock crawl path.

A Good Start Meant Strong Finish

The 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD PRO has the right elements, to begin with. It comprises of a 3.5 L V-6 engine, with a 278 horsepower with a 265 LB-ft torque output. It is available with both a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission gear set.

The TRD PRO variant has boosted the 2017 Toyota Tacoma's capability. It makes it more prepared for a high-speed off-road requirement. Toyota has still allowed its Tacoma drivers to row their own gears. It is a manual with impressive nice notches and throws, according to Auto Guide.

But Didn't The Tacoma Receive A "Poor" Headlight Rating?

There is no denial. The Toyota Tacoma is one of the UTEs tested that failed the headlights test. It had received a poor rating from The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or IIHS. The only UTE that passed the test was the 2017 Honda Ridgeline pick-up.

However, it is rare for UTEs to be used for long hours during the night. Also, data on road accidents at night has not provided alarming numbers for the Toyota Tacoma's involvement during these mishaps.

The Off-Road Test Result

In the end, the consistently top Japanese UTE has a great off-road drive feeling. Its ground clearance is the rest of the current Tacoma line up at 9.4 inches high. This allows for a seamless trek into the wild, according to Motor Trend.

As to which between the Tacoma's manual or automatic transmission fared better, is fairly relative to the one behind the wheel. The truth is both has passed the 3-way off-road tests without a cold sweat.
