Ford Motor Company boasts that three of its vehicles - the Ford Taurus, Ford Explorer, and Lincoln MKS - have received five stars in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).
The NCAP tests the vehicles' ability to resist rollover, as well as how they hold up in front- and side-impact crashes.
Among the safety features that the three cars have for the 2013 model year are redesigned passenger airbags. The force of the airbags' activation is based on the size of the occupant, the position of the seat, and whether or not the safety belt is fastened. In addition, Ford's first passenger-side knee airbag is contained in the Explorer.
The Explorer also features optional inflatable rear safety belts to minimize stress on passengers' torsos in the event of a high-impact collision.
The three models also possess Ford's Safety Canopy System, which includes a side air curtain and rollover sensor. They also have electronic or roll stability control systems that detect when the car takes a curve too fast. The system reduces torque and increases brake pressure to ensure that the curve is safely navigated.
There are also forward collision and blind spot alert systems; in the event that a crash does happen, post-crash alert systems that unlock the doors and activate the horn and emergency flashers to notify passersby.
For those concerned about younger or inexperienced drivers in the family, a system called MyKey gives the power to limit speed and audio volume, prevent incoming phone calls and texts, and implement the Belt-Minder "No Belt, No Tunes" feature.
