GM Recalls Chevy Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Saab 9-7x, Isuzu Ascender

General Motors is issuing a recall of nearly a quarter of a million vehicles owing to a potential fire hazard.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has listed the affected vehicles as certain Chevrolet Trailblazer EXTs and GMC Envoy XLs from model year 2006; and certain Chevrolet Trailblazers, GMC Envoys, Buick Rainiers, SAAB 9-7x's, and Isuzu Ascenders from model years 2006 to 2007.

The vehicles were sold or are currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.

According to the NHTSA, the vehicles carry the danger of fluid entering the driver's door module, causing corrosion that could in turn cause a short in the circuit board. This may lead to disruptions in the functioning of the power door locks and window switches. More seriously, it may cause overheating, which could melt components of the door module, producing a strange odor, smoke, and even fire.

The findings are the result of a preliminary evaluation opened by the NHTSA on February 9, 2012 to  evaluate melting  and/or  burning  of the  driver-side master power window switch and its electrical components in Chevrolet Trailblazers belonging to model years 2006 and 2007.

Plans to rectify the problem are still being finalized; and no notification schedule has been completed yet. GM will notify Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC owners; while Isuzu owners will be notified by Isuzu Motors and Saab owners will be notified by Saab Cars North America.
