A Chevy Spark with an unusual paint job will serve through 2013 as the pace car and official vehicle of the nationwide Color Run 5K races.
The Color Run takes place in cities across the USA to benefit at least one local charity in each city. This coming Saturday and Sunday, the run will take place at the Aviator Sports Center in Brooklyn; and will benefit the Police Unity Tour and Tuesday's Children, an organization devoted to helping those impacted by the September 11attacks.
The run is a colorful event - literally. Runners are doused in a different color paint for each kilometer that they run. According to Chevy, 10,000 runners are expected to take part in the Brooklyn run.
"We created the tag line 'The happiest 5K on the planet' when we saw how happy The Color Run made people; now the Chevrolet Spark's involvement is going to help us bring more happiness to runners and charity partners in more cities," Travis Snyder, executive director of The Color Run, said in a statement. "We also love the fact that our events lead people to have a more healthy and active lifestyle."
Remaining Color Runs this year will be held in Washington DC (September 9); Portland, Oregon (September 29); Miami (October 21); Houston (November 11); Orlando (Dec. 2); and St. Petersburg, Florida (December 15).
Chevy is, of course, hoping that the Spark's sponsorship of the event will help generate publicity for its minicar, which went on sale last month and is intended to compete with the Mini and Fiat 500.
"The Spark and The Color Run are perfect running mates because both appeal to style-conscious, high-energy urbanites who don't live life in neutral," said Cristi Landy, marketing director for the Spark. "We hope Color Runners will like what they see when they meet the Spark."
