Audi has aimed a greater height as the exclusive edition of the 2017 R8 V10 Plus features headlights that combine LEDs with laser high-beams. The technology is first of a kind for Audi and also the United States.
Technically, the 2017 Audi R8 V10 Plus Exclusive Edition is not the first car to be produced with laser lights in the United States as the BMW i8 was the first car to be produced with the lighting technology. The BMW i8 it debuts in 2014 and was brought to United States buyers in 2016.
Each headlight unit has a laser module that operates with four, high-intensity laser diodes. The energy from those diodes is bundled into one single blue laser beam with a wavelength of 450 nanometers, which Audi incorporated into the slick housing design.
That blue light then runs through a phosphor lens, which converts the blue laser beam into a very bright light white that extends much farther and gives greater visibility than a traditional headlight. Audi also said that the lasers are reserved for high-beams that only operate above 40 mph when conditions permit, as a supplement to the LED high-beams.
In addition to lighting advancements, the 2017 Audi R8 V10 Plus Exclusive Edition also features a quantum gray exterior with a titanium black optic exterior package, 20-inch wheels in a high-gloss coal finish, 10-spoke gloss anthracite coal front grille, and a solar orange vertical stripe on its carbon-fiber side panel.
The interior also features matching vertical orange leather elements and on the steering wheel. Motor Trend states that if this is not enough to make an Audi stand out, then the exclusive Alcantara headliner comes with diamond stitching. Audi said the 25 exclusive edition has a starting MSRP of $230,450. The retail price is estimated to rise in 2017 and so it is advisable to make an order now as it likely to sell out fast.
