Katarina Witt has returned to the Olympics - this time as a brand ambassador.
The two-time gold medalist - whose career path is worth taking note of by current Olympians looking to parlay their fame into some moolah - is the BMW Group Olympic Ambassador. As BMW is Official Automotive Partner to the 2012 London Olympics, Witt has some traction in the Olympic Village.
A recent appearance was at the "Deutsches Haus", the German Olympic headquarters in London. The theme for the evening was "Munich '72", and Witt was on hand to test the C evolution, BMW's electric scooter prototype.
The scooter will be tested on the streets of London this month, with an eye toward a not-too-distant production launch.
Witt mingled with German officials and gave a dutiful, thoughtfully-prepared impression of the bike.
"The BMW C evolution not only looks cool, but also features cutting-edge technology," Witt said in a statement prepared by BMW. "With this electric scooter, BMW is once again demonstrating its high levels of innovation. The BMW Group was involved in the marathon and walking races at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich with the BMW 1602 electric car. As such, today's anniversary event sees the issue of environmentalism come full circle."
Give the lady her check.
Witt, born in East Germany in 1965, won gold medals in figure skating at the 1984 Sarajevo and 1984 Calgary Olympics. She also won the World Championships four times and the European Championships six times.
She parlayed her victories into American fame and success, touring extensively in an ice show, scoring an endorsement deal with Diet Coke, and - in 1998 - posing for Playboy.
She has also published a novel and taken acting jobs such as a small part in the 1996 Tom Cruise movie Jerry Maguire.
