Mercedes-Benz Claims Sales Remain Strong Worldwide

Mercedes-Benz sold 97,327 units last month, with a year-to-date total of 750,251, a 5.5-percent increase over last year's figures.

"Despite many upcoming model changes and difficult market conditions in Southern Europe, for the year to date we continue on a path of growth and are well on track to setting a new sales record in 2012 that will get a special boost by our new A-Class, which goes on sale in September," Dr. Joachim Schmidt, sales and marketing executive vice president of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said in a statement. "The gradual introduction of additional new models like the CLS Shooting Brake and the GL-Class will give further momentum to our sales."

North American year-to-date sales have reached a record high, rising 10.1 percent in Canada and 26 percent in Canada. The 147,905 vehicles sold in the US represent a 13.8-percent increase. July sales in the US were 1.6 percent higher than the previous July, at 19,311 vehicles.

Russia and South Korea also saw record increases, at 24.5 and 8.7 percent respectively. In Japan, Mercedes experienced a 16.8-percent increase last month.

In China, year-to-date sales rose 6.7 percent to a record 113,519 units. July sales were less than in the previous year, at 14,128, but Mercedes attributes this to the unavailability of the B-Class model. The next generation B-Class will hit the Chinese market late this month.

In the loyal German domestic market, Mercedes claims to be the premium brand with the highest number of sales year-to-date. The company saw sales increase 2 percent over last at 149,016 units. While the Western European car market in general is down, the company says it saw slight increases over last year at 176,601 vehicles.
