General Motors and its Chinese partners have announced its best July ever in terms of sales in China. The company sold 199,503 units in the Asian country, a 15.1-percent increase over July 2011.
Shanghai GM saw sales rise 5.7 percent over last July to 97,064 vehicles. Shanghai GM is a partnership between GM and the Chinese SAIC Motor Corporation carmaker. It manufactures and sells 26 models under the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and Opel marques in China.
Buick sales increased by 4.8 percent over July 2011 to a record 52,691 units. Sales of the original Excelle, which is available only on the Chinese market, rose to 21,727 cars, an 18.2-percent increase over last July. Sales of the Excelle XT and GT increased 27.6 percent to 13,112 units.
Chevrolet sales in China sank to 44,864 vehicles, a 2.8-percent decrease from last July; though some models saw increases. The Sail, a China-only mini, increased 30.1 percent 16,464 cars, a record for July. Sales of the Chevy Cruze rose 5.5 percent to 17,268, another monthly record.
Shanghai GM's Cadillac lineup consists of the ATS, CTS, SLS, SRX, and Escalade models. The badge sold 2,017 units in July, the biggest seller being the SRX crossover with 1,508 units.
Sales of SAIC-GM-Wuling reached 98,694 vehicles, a 26.6-percent over last July. The company manufactures some of the Chevrolet Sparks in China, as well as cheap vans and commercial vehicles for the Chinese market. Wuling sales increased 32.7 percent to a record for July of 94,178 units. The company's Baojun 630 sedan experienced sales of 2,008 units in its first July in the market.
FAW-GM, a partnership between GM and FAW Group that produces mainly light trucks, saw sales go up 3.1 percent to 3,379 units.
Year-to-date sales for GM and its Chinese partners increased 11.7 percent to 1,616,550 units, a new record. Shanghai GM's year-to-date sales increased 6.5 percent to 736,613 units. SAIC-GM-Wuling saw sales rise 17.4 percent to 844,121 units; while FAW-GM's sales were down 2.9 percent to 32,551 units.
