Here is some good news and bad news combo for Mustang fans. While the legendary Ford sports car has been provided with a new performance enhancing kit that ups the power rating considerably, the model itself has seen its appeal diminish off late with rival Chevy Camaro taking a rare sales lead.
Coming to the upgrade kit first, there are four of them that have been made available. Of these, three apply to the Mustang GT models that wields its magic on the stock 5.0 V8 engine. The least potent kit allows for an increase of 13 bhp and 16 lb-ft improvement over the 435 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque the engine delivers in its standard state.
Then there is the kit that allows for a slightly better performance improvement, raising power and torque rating by 21 hp and 24 lb-ft brought about by the incorporation by an 87-millimeter throttle body as well as the Shelby GT350's intake adapter, Motor Authority reported.
The third kit is also the most potent and works to liberate an extra 37 horses and 5 lb-ft of torque while also pushing the redline to 7,500 rpm. Overall, its 472 hp and 405 lb-ft that the Mustang GT will have on tap following the incorporation of the third power kit.
The Mustang EcoBoost, on the other hand, benefits from a single performance kit that increases the power rating by 25 hp and 70 lb-ft.
The least priced kit costs $599 for the V8 engine while the costliest of the trio sets one back a cool $2,395. The latter comprises of a new air filter, cold air intake, throttle body and an intake adapter borrowed over from the Shelby Mustang GT350, AutoCar reported.
Mustang demand on a receding pitch
Meanwhile, Mustang has given way to the Chevy Camaro as the best-selling American sports car last month. The last time the feat was repeated was in October 2014. The development has already prompted Ford to shut its Mustang factory in Flat Rock, Michigan for a week to help recalibrate supply with demand.
Mustang has had a promising run at the market, more so after its upgrade two years ago in celebration of the iconic sports car's 50th anniversary. The good show got curtailed last month though on the back of strong incentives for the Camaro that made the Chevy offering cheaper by $3,409. In contrast, the best that the Mustang benefitted from is a discount of $2,602, Bloomberg reported.
That said, the victory margin isn't too great given that the Camaro found 6,577 buyers in September compared to 6,429 units of the Mustang.
