Volkswagen announced itself extremely pleased with its US sales for June, reporting 37,014 vehicles sold, a 27.3-percent increase over previous 2012 months, a 34.1-percent increase over July of last year, and the best July since 1973.
Results, however, were mixed, model by model.
The Golf, recently named Most Ideal Compact Car by AutoPacific, sold 2,058 units last month, a 4.3-percent increase over last year. The GTI saw a more modest 0.8-percent increase.
Volkswagen's SUVs also saw significant increases. The Tiguan sold 2,966 units, a 26.2-percent increase over July 2011; while the Touareg saw a jump of 41.8-percent to 740 units sold.
The Routan minivan experienced a sharp decline in sales, dropping 31.9 percent to 1,094 units.
Less steep was the Jetta's decline. The sedan sold 11,666 vehicles last month, or 12,8 percent less than July of 2011; while the Jetta SportWagen sold 13,629 units, or 15.8 percent less.
The runaway star of the Volkswagen fleet last month was the Passat, which sold 9,007 units, an increase of 661.4 percent over last year.
Positive publicity no doubt helped. The Passat was Motor Trend's 2012 Car of the Year, J.D. Power and Associates' most appealing midsize car, and AutoPacific's Most Ideal Premium Mid-Size Car and Vehicle Satisfaction Award winner.
"Volkswagen has proven demand and enthusiasm for our products with over 37,000 units sold for the month, continuing the pace of double-digit sales growth for 2012," Jonathan Browning, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, said in a statement. "We're pleased to see consumers embracing our strong lineup of award-winning, fuel-efficient, high-quality vehicles and we expect our growth to continue."
