Toyota today released its July 2012 US sales numbers for the Toyota and Lexus divisions.
The company sold a total of 164,898 units during the month, a year-over-year increase of 36.6 percent. Of these, 146,663 were Toyotas (a 36.7-percent increase over the same period last year), while 18,235 represented Lexuses (a 35.9-percent upswing from July 2011).
Toyota passenger cars accounted for 80,061 units, a year-over-year increase of 33.2 percent. Camry and Camry Hybrid led the segment with combined sales of 29,913 cars, and Corolla sold 23,640 units throughout the month. Prius sold 16,643 cars.
Toyota's light trucks division reported 66,602 sales, meaning an 18.6-percent increase over July 2011. The RAV4 compact SUV led the segment with 15,248 units sold, followed by the Tacoma mid-size pickup with 11,350 units. Highlander and Highlander Hybrid 10,669 units, with the Tundra full-size pickup selling 9,176.
Toyota Scion sold 6,904 units during the month, a 97.3-percent increase over the same period last year. Of these, the tC sport coupe sold 2,013 (a 26.6-percent year-over-year increase), while the xD sold 977 and the xB sold 1,708. Of the two new Scions, the FR-S sports car sold 1,649 and the iQ "premium micro-subcompact" sold 557.
Lexus cars (as opposed to SUVs) experienced sales of 9,759 units during the month, up 22.4 percent from the same period last year. The ES 350 led its pricier fleet mates with 3,759 units sold, while the IS sold 2,296 and the CT 200h hybrid compact sold 1,499.
Lexus's SUV segment sold 8,476 units, a year-over-year increase of 29.1 percent. The RX and RX Hybrid luxury sold 7,357 units, while the GX 460 sold 813 and the LX sold 306.
Of the 23,044 hybrid vehicles sold, 20,309 were Toyotas and 2,735 were Lexuses. This represents an increase in total hybrid sales of 126 percent over July 2011.
