Global company Nestle has recently announced that they are recalling certain products, particularly some variants of their Drumstick Ice Cream, after a reported health risk.

In an official press release from Nestle today, the company said that some of the Drumstick products tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Affected varieties include Nestlé Drumstick Club 16 ct. Variety Pack and Nestlé Drumstick 24 ct. pack.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause listeriosis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers listeriosis as an important public health problem in the United States. People who are usually affected by the said disease include children, older and pregnant women as well as those with a generally weaker immune system.

Initial symptoms of the disease (which are usually short-term) include nausea, diarrhea, severe headache, and high fever among others. Listeriosis is more critical for pregnant women because when left untreated, it may cause miscarriages or stillbirths.

Nestle clarified however that traces of the bacterium were found at the specific equipment used for manufacturing the said Drumstick products. Other products tested negative and will continue to be sold elsewhere.

"The two pack sizes contain 4.6 fl.oz. cones and were manufactured in Bakersfield, Calif. and distributed nationally. No other production codes, sizes or varieties of Nestlé Drumstick products are affected by this recall," the press release reads.

They also added that the recall serves as a precautionary measure to avoid any other incidents that may arise from the said mishap. According to Fox 25, Nestle always conducts "test and hold" programs for their product, indicating that the company has detected the said variants to be positive of the bacterium.

However, due to a logging error on their part, the products were unintentionally approved for distribution. Upon discovering this, Nestle immediately asked the Food and Drugs Administration for a recall.

No other cases of affected patients are reported as of now. Nestle urges customers who have purchased the product to not consume it and immediately return the product to where it was bought or call their customer service line to request for a replacement.
